Tariq Ramadan is a second generation European (Switzerland) Muslim Scholar, dubbed a 'reformist' by some but also is a keen and devout Muslim. Ramadan is the grandson of Hassan al-Banna who founded the conservative Muslim Brotherhood in 1928, which advocates a return to traditional Muslim life. Ramadan on the other hand advocated a Muslim Renaissance, an informal group of Muslims with idealistic visions of Medieval Islam, aiming to restore the kind of society that the Fatimid Muslims of Cairo championed. The Fatimids were the highlight of the Muslim golden age, with strong emphasis on education, the Liberal arts and pluralism.
