Suriname (Dutch: Suriname; Sarnami: Sarnam, Sranan Tongo: Sranan), officially the Republic of Suriname, is a country in northern South America.

Suriname is situated between French Guiana to the east and Guyana to the west. The southern border is shared with Brazil and the northern border is the Atlantic coast. The southernmost borders with French Guiana and Guyana are disputed along the Marowijne and Corantijn rivers, respectively; while a part of the disputed maritime boundary with Guyana was arbitrated by the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea on September 20, 2007.

Suriname is the only Dutch speaking country on the mainland South American continent and the only Dutch speaking territory in the world that is not part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands or Belgium. It is one of the most ethnically, linguistically and culturaly diverse nations in the world, the population includes Amerindians, descendants of African slaves, descendants of immigrant laborers from China, India and Indonesia and more recent immigrants from elsewhere in South America.

Religion in Suriname[]

Suriname does not have an official state-religion and there is no single majority religion in the country. The population includes Christians, both Roman Catholics and members of various Protestant churches, Hindus and Sikhs. Muslims make up 20% of the population of Suriname, the highest proportion of any country in South America. About 1.0% of the population are Buddhists.

National holidays in Suriname include the Christian celebrations of Sinterklaas Day (December 5) and Christmas (December 25) as well as the Hindu festivals of Holi and Diwali and the Muslim festivals of Eid al-Adha and Eid ul-Fitr, which follows Ramadan.
