Saint Marie-Eugénie de Jésus, born Anne-Eugénie Milleret de Brou, (August 25, 1817, Metz - March 10, 1898) was a Catholic sister who founded the congregation of the Religious of the Assumption in 1839.
On June 3, 2007, she was canonized in the Vatican City by the Pope Benedict XVI
Life[]
She belonged to a wealthy family and grew up in a chateau in Priesch, north of Paris. But when she was 13, her father lost all his money and even their estate. Her parents separated and she moved to Paris with her mother. She often accompanied her mother visiting poor families. Her mother died of cholera when she was 15 years old. She spent her teenage years tossed between two families.
At 12, Anne Eugenie had her first communion and it had such a profound effect on her. She experienced the presence of God, a mystical moment that she would talk about throughout her life.
It was during Lent in Notre Dame listening to Abbe Lacordaire, a famous preacher of that period, that she had a conversion experience. She became passionate about the Word of God and became a devout Christian.
It was Abbe Combalot who told her that he was looking for someone to help him found a religious order devoted to Mary. He was convinced that Anne Eugenie would be the founder. At the age of 22, Anne Marie Eugenie founded the Religious of the Assumption.

The congregation began in a small apartment in rue Ferou, Paris. They celebrated their first mass together as a Religious Congregation on November 9, 1839.
Today, the mother house of the Religious of the Assumption is found in rue de l'Assomption, Paris.
Mother Marie Eugenie died at the age of 80 on March 10, 1898. Anne Eugenie Milleret, who died in 1898, founded thirty communities in 9 countries.
On February 9, 1975, Marie Eugenie Milleret of Jesus was beatified by Pope Paul VI and on June 3, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI canonized her
The Religious of the Assumption number 1300 sisters, from 44 nationalities, present in 34 countries in 4 continents. It recognized from the beginning that their work would be a partnership with the laity. Today's Assumption is a Lay and Religious partnership.
