Prayers or devotions to Mary are important to many Roman Catholics, High Anglicans, Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Christians. Most Protestants reject Marian prayers as improper, arguing that Marian devotion is akin to worship.
Catholics and Orthodox retort that this is not worship but merely veneration. The earliest known Marian prayer is Deipara, Dei Genetrix, from the fifth century AD, with words "We you for protection, holy Mother of God." Probably the most well known Marian prayer is the Hail Mary which is part of the Rosary.
