Malta /ˈmɔːltə/ officially the Republic of Malta (Maltese: Repubblika ta' Malta), is a densely populated developed European country in the European Union. The Southern European island nation comprises an archipelago of seven islands situated centrally in the Mediterranean Sea, 93 km off the coast of Sicily (Italy). The distance from the nearest point on the North African mainland, in Tunisia, is 288 km with the island of Gibraltar 1,826 km to the west and Alexandria, Egypt 1,510 km to the east.

Religion in Malta

The constitution of Malta declares Roman Catholicism to be the country's official state religion. According to the CIA world Factbook, Roman Catholicisim is adhered to by 98% of the Maltese population.

Those who attend Protestant churches in Malta are usually retirees from England and visiting holidaymakers from other countries, not Maltese citizens.

Malta was under the control of the Spanish crown in 1492, consequently the proclamation of the Alhambra Decree meant that all Jews had to leave the island or convert to Christianity. Today there is one synagogue in Malta.

There is one Muslim mosque in Malta and a small Baha'i community. Less than 0.1% of the inhabitants of Malta are Buddhists.
