Daniel Lytle Dolan (born May 28, 1951 - April 26, 2022), was a sedevacantist traditionalist Catholic bishop born in Detroit, Michigan. He began his preparation for the priesthood in 1965 at the archdiocesan minor seminary in Detroit. He continued his studies in the Cistercian Order and at the seminary of the Society of Saint Pius X in Ecône, Switzerland, where he was ordained a priest by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre on June 29, 1976.

As a seminarian at Ecône in autumn 1973, he had come to the conclusion that "the only logical explanation" for the New Mass and the alleged heresy of the Second Vatican Council was that Pope Paul VI, due to (alleged) personal heresy, had lost the Roman pontificate. Ever since, he has held the position of sedevacantism regarding Pope Paul VI and his successors.

In early 1977 Father Dolan returned to the United States where in a few years he had founded over 35 traditionalist Mass centers from East coast to West.

In early 1983, Archbishop Lefebvre directed the SSPX's American priests to follow the liturgical books of 1962. Lefebvre also insisted priests publicly affirmed their allegiance to Pope John Paul II, which sedevacantists among them would refuse. Nine American priests, including Father Dolan, refused to conform, and were promply expelled from the SSPX. These priests formed the Society of Saint Pius V.

Father Dolan continued his work at his principal church in West Chester, Ohio. In 1989, after years of maintaining they were schismatic, Father Dolan initiated contacts with the Congregation of Mary Immaculate Queen.

Subsequent discussions revealed agreement on major theological issues. On November 30, 1993 Bishop Mark Pivarunas, a Thuc Line Bishop of the Congregation of Mary Immaculate Queen, consecrated Father Dolan bishop.

Bishop Dolan served in his church in Cincinnati as well as sedevacantist communities in the United States, Mexico and Europe.

Death[]

On the afternoon of April 26th, 2022, Bishop Dolan unexpectedly died alone in his rectory. Dolan had been planning a large meal for him and the priests of St Gertrude, and after speaking for some time with Fr Mckenna, said that he (Dolan) was going to his office to finish writing a retreat. That was the last time he was seen alive, for he died without warning, all alone except in the presence of God.

His death coming just hours after a Twitter post, His post was:

"Blessed feast of the Mother of Good Counsel! How Our Lady has helped and protected us under this generous title over the years. A novena begun today ends May 4, Solemnity of St. Joseph, Ordination Day for our four priests: a providential help for many souls. Pray with us? Pray too that Our Lady’s Good Counsel will help heal painful divisions by correcting the current errors concerning the Church and the papacy. Only she can help, which is why she was given to us. She holds Jesus, Angel of Great Counsel, in her arms. Counsel and protect us, we pray.

The Mother of Good Counsel is called the Madonna of Popes. The last, Pius XII, took her for the Patroness of his pontificate. While highly clerical today, this devotion exemplifies the Lay Apostolate: Petruccia, a wealthy widow who worked on repairing the old shrine, all alone…

Meanwhile, back in Albania, the national hero Skanderberg loved her tenderly, and the two laymen followed Our Lady’s image to Italy, not content until they found her. Imitate them, follow her. She’ll give you her Jesus, her Great Counsel. Always ask: Mother, what am I to do?"

His cause of death has yet to be released. He was succeeded by Charles McGuire.
