Churches and other Religious Groups of Barnstable County, Massachusetts: Located on the scenic Cape Cod peninsula in the far eastern portion of the state. This region is home to some of the oldest churches in America (and a few newer ones too.)

Christian Denominations[]

There are many, many churches in this community, both large and small. They strive to interpret and live the gospel of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Holy Bible. Denomination typically refers to one of the many Christian groupings including each of the multitude of Protestant subdivisions.

Baptist Church[]

Baptists form a major branch of Protestant Christianity distinguished by baptizing professing Christian believers only, and doing so by complete immersion. Historians trace the earliest "Baptist" church to 1609 in Amsterdam, Dutch Republic with English Separatist John Smyth as its pastor.

Catholic Church[]

The Catholic Church, also known as the Roman Catholic Church, is the world's largest Christian church. With more than a billion members, over half of all Christians and more than one-sixth of the world's population, the Catholic Church is a communion of the Western, or (Latin Rite) Church, and 22 autonomous Eastern Catholic Churches (called particular churches), comprising a total of 2,795 dioceses in 2008.

Boston Massachusetts Temple - 100th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was completed in 1981.

"As Christians, we believe in learning all we can about Jesus. The greatest happiness in life comes from following the Savior. You will feel His love for you as you seek to understand His life and teachings."[1] This church was founded by their first prophet Joseph Smith in 1830 upstate New York and now has over 16 million members organized into 3300+ "stakes" worldwide. There are several stakes in the local area. (Also referred to as LDS Church or Mormon Church.)

Episcopal Church[]

The Episcopal Church in the United States is a member of the Worldwide Anglican Communion, churches around the world that trace their roots to the Church of England and have given rise to a distinct form of Christianity, known as Anglicanism. The Episcopal Church is made up of between two and three million worshipers in about 7500 congregations across the United States and related dioceses outside the US.

Jehovah's Witness[]

Jehovah's Witnesses are members of a religion who, although identifying themselves as Christian, are not generally considered as Christians by mainstream Christianity because they are non-trinitarian. They number around seven and a half million. Their headquarters are in New York, USA. The Jehovah's Witnesses are an international organization known for their extensive preaching and publishing activities. They are well known for their rejection of blood transfusions and their specific version of the Bible which some believe is very accurate and others take issue with.

Lutheran Church[]

Lutheranism is a Christian tradition committed to the main theological insights of Martin Luther. It is numerically the third largest single Christian movement, with an estimated 82.6 million people belonging to the various congregations, bodies, and churches which call themselves Lutheran.

The Methodist movement is a group of historically related denominations of Protestant Christianity.

Orthodox Church[]

The Orthodox Church, also officially called the Orthodox Catholic Church, and commonly referred to in English-speaking countries as the Eastern Orthodox Church, is the world's second largest Christian communion, estimated to number 300 Million  It is considered by its adherents to be the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church established by Jesus Christ and his Apostles almost 2,000 years ago.

The Greek Orthodox Church (Greek: Ελληνορθόδοξη Εκκλησία, Hellēnorthódoxē Ekklēsía) is the body of several churches[3][4][5] within the larger communion of the Orthodox Church, sharing a common cultural tradition and whose liturgy is traditionally conducted in Koine Greek,[6] the original language of the New Testament.

Presbyterian Church[]

The Presbyterian Church (USA), abbreviated PC(USA), is a mainline Protestant denomination in the United States. A part of the Reformed tradition, it is the largest Presbyterian denomination in the US, and known for its relatively progressive stance on doctrine.

  • Presbyterian Church of Cape Cod (Barnstable) - " (PCCC) seeks to recapture and reflect historic Reformed worship which was distinguished by its understanding that worship is before all else a meeting of the triune God with His people."

The Salvation Army[]

The Salvation Army (TSA) is a Christian church and an international charitable organisation. The organisation reports a worldwide membership of over 1.7 million, consisting of soldiers, officers and adherents collectively known as Salvationists. Its founders sought to bring salvation to the poor, destitute, and hungry by meeting both their "physical and spiritual needs".

Unitarian Universalism[]

Unitarian Universalism (UU) is a liberal religion characterized by a "free and responsible search for truth and meaning". Unitarian Universalists assert no creed, but instead are unified by their shared search for spiritual growth, guided by a dynamic, "living tradition".

United Church of Christ[]

The United Church of Christ is a historical continuation of the General Council of Congregational Christian churches founded under the influence of New England Pilgrims and Puritans. It traces its roots to the first pilgrim congregation founded in London in 1616.

  • Cotuit Federated Church - "No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here." We are in covenant relationship with two denominations – the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church.
    • BSA Troop 52 - Troop #52 ROCKS! We encourage our scouts to realize that the words in the Boy Scout oath gain new meaning when applied in everyday life.
  • South Congregational Church (Centerville MA) " We seek to be a village church with a global perspective. " South Congregational Church met for the first time in 1796 on Phinneys Lane as a satellite congregation of East Parish Church, and organized as South Parish in 1816. It was founded to be the “intellectual and moral center of the village.”
  • West Parish of United Church of Christ - Gathered in London 1616 – Present Meetinghouse Erected 1717. A Church in the Congregational Tradition – United Church of Christ.
  • First Congregational Church of Yarmouth Port - Established in 1639, coincident with Yarmouth's founding, was Yarmouth's official church during colonial times when a church was required for a community to be incorporated.  Originally located in what we now call Ancient Cemetery on a site presently marked by a large rock, the church was constructed of logs, measured 30 x 40 feet, with a thatched roof and windows made of paper soaked with whale oil.  Members were called to service by the beat of a drum as there was no bell.
    • BSA Troop 50/150 - BSA Scouting for Boys and Girls - This Troop camps and engages in community service projects through out the year.

Judaism is an ethnic religion comprising the collective religious, cultural, and legal tradition and civilization of the Jewish people. Judaism is considered by religious Jews to be the expression of the covenant that God established with the Children of Israel.

The objectives of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) are referred to as the Aims of Scouting: Character, Citizenship, Personal Fitness, Leadership. The BSA pursues these aims through an informal education system called the Scout method, with variations that are designed to be appropriate for the age and maturity of each membership division. Their Character building program emphasizes Duty to God. They charter with many local religious groups of all faiths to deliver this program.
