- 1933: The government of Iraq (which had achieved independence from the United Kingdom the previous year), slaughtered over 3,000 Assyrian Christians in the village of Sumail. Syria refused to offer assylum to the Assyrian Christians. The day becomes Assyrian Martyrs Day. Patriarch Mar Eshai Shimun XXIII seeks refuge in Cyprus.
