Apostasy is the act of denouncing, rejecting, or falling away from one's religion. A person who commits apostasy is called an apostate.
The Restorationist churches teach that the majority of Christianity fell into a Great Apostasy early in church history. Conversely, many mainline Christians believe that the restorationists are themselves apostates or heretics.
