- Edwards v. Aguillard. The US Supreme Court again ruled, this time in , that requiring the teaching of creation every time evolution was taught illegally advanced a particular religion, although a variety of views on origins could be taught in public schools if shown to have a basis in science. The court further ruled that so-called "creation science" was simply creationism.
- The Seventh-day Adventist Church filed legal action in California to prevent SDA Kinship (a social network of current and former Church members who are homosexual, bisexual, or transendered) from using the name "Seventh-day Adventist" and its abbreviation "SDA."
- Pope John Paul II releases two enylicals, Redemptoris Mater and Sollicitudo Rei Socialis
- November 7. The American Association of Lutheran Churches separates from the American Lutheran Church in protest over the pending merger into the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (see 1982, 1988).
