Four Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS) district presidents are removed from office for allowing their congregations to ordain ministers trained at Seminex. In protest, 250 LCMS congregations leave the synod to form the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, including the liberal Seminex congregations and moderate congregations who were members of the Evangelical Lutherans in Mission. The AELC later (in 1988) became one of the three Lutheran churches that merged into the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
