- Patriarch Tikhon of the Russian Orthodox Church issues an ukase (decree) that Orthodox Christians under his leadership but outside of Russia should seek refuge with whatever Orthodox jurisdiction that would shield them from Communist control. This is the beginning of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia.
- Serbian Orthodox bishop Nikolai Velimirovic becomes archbishop of Ohrid in Macedonia.
- Government of Ireland act paritions Ireland. Much of the Province of Ulster comes under the rule of the United Kingdom as Northern Ireland.
- The Anglican Church in Wales is disestablished and merged with the Church of England as the Welsh Church Act of 1914 goes into effect.
- Death of United States Old Catholic bishop Rudolph de Landas Berghes et de Rache.
- May 18: Birth of Karol Józef Wojtyła, later Pope John Paul II
