- Martin Luther, with the assistance of Johannes Bugenhagen, Justus Jonas, Caspar Creuziger, Philipp Melanchthon, Matthew Aurogallus, and George Rörer completes the translation of the Bible into German.
- John Calvin writes the Institutes of the Christian Religion, which would be published in 1536.
- The British Parliament passes the Act of Supremacy, naming the King of England (starting with King Henry VIII) the head on Earth of the Church of England, and officially separates Anglicanism from the Roman Catholic Church.
- August 15: Saint Ignatius of Loyola and six other students form the Society of Jesus.
